Manabí Coast

Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.  The region of Manabí is on the central coast of Ecuador, where fishing, dairy and shrimp farming are a large source of the local economy.  Due to fluctuating commodity prices pressure to produce and harvest more from the environment, the local ecosystem is in danger, which will negatively affect the communities that depend on them.

Our local partner Fundación BOMACO has spent many years developing relationships with local communities and government officials to create protected areas and infrastructure to support sustainable fisheries and farming.  BOMACO stands for Bosques, Mares y Comunidades (Forests, Oceans and Communities). Their focus is to create and implement conservation plans together with local governments, decision makers and communities. This will allow them to better protect the coastal ecosystem and develop alternatives for sustainable livelihoods for local people, thus improving their income and capacity to care for the environment.
